From Proto-Indo-Iranian *mánas (“mind”), from Proto-Indo-European *ménos (“mind”), from *men- (“to think”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬥𐬀𐬵 (manah), Old Persian 𐎶𐎴𐏃 (m-n-h /⁠manah⁠/), Latin mēns, Ancient Greek μένος (ménos), and English mind. Equivalent to मन् (man, "to think", root) +‎ -अस् (-as).

     उत त्वा स्त्री शशीयसी पुंसो भवति वस्यसी ।
     अदेवत्रादराधसः ॥
     वि या जानाति जसुरिं वि तृष्यन्तं वि कामिनम् ।
     देवत्रा कृणुते मनः ॥

     uta tvā strī śaśīyasī puṃso bhavati vasyasī.
     adevatrādarādhasaḥ.
     vi yā jānāti jasuriṃ vi tṛṣyantaṃ vi kāminam.
