Etymology 1
From Old Japanese 箕 (mi2), perhaps from earlier Proto-Japonic *mui, which was loaned into Ainu ムイ (mui) and possibly Proto-Ryukyuan *m(u)i, whence Kunigami 箕笊筒 (muijōkī) and Miyako 箕 (mui). In the Man'yōshū, this was used to phonetically write Old Japanese ⟨mi2⟩.
This word had once referred to a squared winnowing basket which originated in northern China and was imported to Japan from Korea.[1] However, the exact source of this word is unknown.
