From Old Khmer វត្ត (vatta), វត (vata), វ័ត (vâta), វត្យ (vatya), វត្រ (vatra), វត្ថ (vattha), -វាត (°vāta, “Buddhist temple compound; monastery”). Possibly related to Old Khmer វត្ត៑ (“to encircle; to enclose > enceinte”). Cognate with Modern Khmer វត្ត (voat); Lao ວັດ (wat); Lü ᦞᧆ (vad); Shan ဝတ်ႉ (wâ̰t).

     Section 1623 When a bhikṣu dies, the property of the bhikṣu which had obtained during the time he was in the priesthood shall devolve upon the wat which is the domicile of that bhikṣu as the possession , save where the bhikṣu has disposed of inter vivos or by a will.

     Section 1624 any property has belonged to a person before his ordination as a bhikṣu, such property does not devolve upon his wat as its possession and shall become the estate passes on to the statutory heirs of that person or may be disposed of by that person in whatever manner according to the law.

     Section 5 Wat are divided by this Law into three types, namely, phra aram luang one type, aram rat one type, thi samnak song the other type... Phra aram luang are wat established by the monarch... Aram rat are wat which have been granted the wisungkhammasima but have not yet been entered in the register for recognition as public wat... Thi samnak song are wat which have not yet been granted the wisungkhammasima land.

Probably from Old Khmer vatta, Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer vatt, hvat, or Angkorian Old Khmer vatt, vatta, vāt, vātt, vvat, hvat, hvatt, vādya (“to move in a circle, to go round, to turn, to rotate, to revolve, to gyrate; to move or occur in turn; to go around, to make a tour; to encircle, to surround; etc”); or from Old Khmer *vas, vas, vās, *vās (“to curve around; to sweep; to traverse”). Cognate with Modern Khmer វាត់ (vŏət), វាស (viəh), extended as គ្រវាស (krɔviəh), from which Thai กระหวัด (grà-wàt) was derived.
