From Proto-Tai *ʔɤtᴰ (“to go hungry”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩋᩫ᩠ᨯ, Lao ອົດ (ʼot), Shan ဢိုပ်း (ʼúep), Ahom 𑜒𑜢𑜤𑜆𑜫 (ʼüp). Compare Khmer អត់ (ʼɑt).

1. (transitive or intransitive) to abstain or refrain (from); to forbear.

     seems to be able to abstain opium.
