This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “Diverse array of meanings, all which are grouped together by MED. STEDT mentions the senses:
- "string as beads"
- "go by near, skim along"
- "sing, chant"
- "dim, as eyes from age"
and gives none of them etymologies.
Luce mentions the "sing" sense, tentatively adducing Old Chinese 伎 (OC *kjes, *ɡe, *ɡreʔ, “singing performer”), 妓 (OC *kre, *ɡreʔ, “female singing girl”);[1] these seem outdated. He also mentioned the "thread" sense, but adduces no cognates for it.[2]”
