From Proto-Tai *ʔɤtᴰ (“to go hungry”). Doublet of อึด (ʉ̀t). Cognate with Isan อด or อึด, Lao ອົດ (ʼot) or ອຶດ (ʼưt), Northern Thai ᩋᩫ᩠ᨯ (ʔot¹) or ᩋᩧ᩠ᨷ (ʔɯp¹), Khün ᩋᩫ᩠ᨯ (ʔot⁴) or ᩋᩧ᩠ᨷ (ʔɯp⁴), Lü ᦷᦀᧆ (˙ʼod) or ᦀᦹᧇ (˙ʼueb), Tai Dam ꪮꪳꪒ (ứt), Tai Dón ꪮꪳꪒ, Shan ဢိုပ်း (ʼúep), Tai Nüa ᥟᥪᥙᥴ (ʼúep), Ahom 𑜒𑜢𑜤𑜆𑜫 (ʼüp). 1. (transitive or intransitive) to abstain or refrain (from); to forbear.
