Burmese

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /θéɪɴ/
  • Romanization: MLCTS: sim: • ALA-LC: simʻʺ • BGN/PCGN: thein: • Okell: theìñ

Etymology 1

STEDT derives the "gather in" sense from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *zim (to collect, gather), comparing Jingpho sím (to store up, put away), and the "withdraw" sense from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *sjim (to sweep), whence perhaps Old Chinese (OC *sʰim, “to gradually go in, invade”). MED groups all senses together, as there appears to be significant semantic conflation.
