Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *bi) : semantic 豸 + phonetic 𣬉 ().
Etymology
Probably Sino-Tibetan; compare Tibetan དབྱི (dbyi, “lynx”) (Schuessler, 2007).
Schuessler also sees possible cognacy with pi ~ byi in Tibetan པི་ཤི (pi shi) and བྱི་ལ (byi la), though pi ~ byi might be derived from Indic (cf. Hindi बिल्ला (billā) < Sanskrit बिडाल (biḍāla); see the Sanskrit word for ultimate non-Indic etymology); even so, pi ~ byi is still possibly native Tibetan if པི་ཤི (pi shi)'s shi was from earlier *zhi and cognate with 狸 (OC *rɯ), see there for more (ibid.).
