Inherited from Proto-Sino-Tibetan. Cognate with Tibetan འདས ('das, to pass over).

Proto-Tai *daːᴮ (river) (whence Thai ท่า (tâa, port; pier; quay) and Zhuang dah (river)) is a loan from late Old Chinese (Schuessler, 2007).
