Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *pen, *peːn, *peːnʔ): semantic 糸 (“thread”) + phonetic 扁 (OC *pʰen, *benʔ, *peːnʔ, *beːnʔ) – to knit together a book (with thread).
The "phonetic" 扁 is formed from 戶 door and 冊 volume, giving "to 糸 thread (i.e. sew) the 戶 door (i.e. spine) of a 冊 volume (i.e. book)." Thus the composition of the character 編 "compose" well illustrates why categorizing characters as 形聲 "phono-semantic compounds" often obscures rather than clarifies their composition.
Etymology
From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *p(r)an/t ~ b(r)an/t (“to braid; to plait; to interweave”).
