This is a list of the most common given names of Finnish-speaking Finns born in 1880-2009. The material is taken from the Population Register Centre of Finland (Väestörekisterikeskus), covering all given names of Finnish-speaking Finns on birth certificates from 1965 to August 30th, 2009, and the names of the persons who were alive in 1965 when the database was started. All names occurring at least a thousand times are included in the list below.
Finns have typically 2-3 given names: a first name and 1-2 middle names. The first name is usually short and the middle name has three or more syllables: "Matti Juhani", "Maija Meri Tuulikki". The reverse order would sound clumsy to a Finnish ear. Most Finns are addressed by their first given name, though any of them may be chosen. As a result, the multisyllable names listed below are not heard as often as their frequency group would imply.
- Names in bold occurred at least 20 000 times.
- Names in normal typeface occurred 5 000 - 19 999 times.
- Names in italics occurred 1 000 - 4 999 times.
- *Names marked with an asterisk can be called Swedish, and are often pronounced as in Swedish. All names of Finns were recorded in Swedish until the middle of the 19th century, and some Finnish speakers still have such names, particularly in the oldest age groups, or as middle names.
