From Pali viruddha (“contrary, repugnant, incompatible; doubtful, questionable; uncertain, precarious; etc”) or Sanskrit विरुद्ध (viruddha, idem). Compare Old Khmer viruddha (“opposition, contention, dispute, difference, variance; to be at variance, to have a disagreement or dispute”).
