Originally, a (shì, “hereditary clan; house”) created in the state of Jin (), taking the name from the "Central Column" — (zhōng) (háng) — of the Jin armies.

Jìnhóu zuò sān háng yǐ yù Dí, Xún Línfǔ jiàng zhōng háng, Tú Jī jiàng yòu háng, Xiān Miè jiàng zuǒ háng.
The Marquis of Jin established the Three Columns in order to defend against the Di. Xun Linfu, Tu Ji, and Xian Mie commanded the Central, Right, and Left columns respectively.
