- A non-starter without quotes / usexes. DonnanZ (talk) 15:42, 26 July 2020 (UTC)
- I think we would generally feature the lemma, i.e., rootin' tootin', rather than inflections. — SGconlaw (talk) 11:40, 28 July 2020 (UTC)
- Normally I would agree, but in cases where the inflection is particularly "interesting", I think we could be justified in featuring it. For example, I nominated "curiouser" once before. I would say that "rootinest tootinest" is similarly "interesting" as a superlative. At some point I'll try to get back to it and add some citations and stuff. Mihia (talk) 21:12, 28 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Mihia: bear in mind, though, that no quotations will appear in the WOTD, which will look somewhat dull as it will just say "superlative form of rootin' tootin': most rootin' tootin'". — SGconlaw (talk) 21:22, 28 July 2020 (UTC)

breast (Check: R, G, H, W, Y) - especially the verb...! - DonnanZ (talk) 18:42, 4 July 2020 (UTC)
- Hmmm, not sure if this is suitable. Thoughts, anyone? — SGconlaw (talk) 20:32, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
- The nomination wasn't intended for the anatomical sense at all, which is coincidental; it was prompted by the verbal sense after editing that section. DonnanZ (talk) 23:50, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Donnanz: just wondering if readers would complain even if only the verb senses were featured. I think we should start avoiding entries which refer to people in an excessively disparaging way. For some reason people keep nominating entries that are, shall we say, not very flattering to women, like wench and breastaurant (not accepted). One or two occasionally may be tolerable, especially if they are archaic or historical; more than that starts looking like a pattern. — SGconlaw (talk) 04:40, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
- I don't think the noun, which has other senses, is offensive at all, boob or tit are more offensive I think. The best I can suggest is removing the image temporarily at WOTD-time, if it gets that far. DonnanZ (talk) 08:44, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
- I tried disabling the image using < !-- -->, which seems to work (not saved). DonnanZ (talk) 08:34, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
- I don't think the image is the issue (it's a medical illustration, not a photograph). I think the issue is the fact that words which refer to women's bodies or women in unflattering terms seem to get nominated more often than is desirable. Other WOTDs that previously got flak were bodice ripper and mosquito bite. Looking through the current list, I see minx, momzilla, weddingzilla and Xanthippe. I think these might be OK, but for some reason we seem to get far fewer entries that are specifically unflattering to men nominated. — SGconlaw (talk) 09:56, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
- Well, I can think of some - old fart, dirty old man, poof, even gay (when someone is told they are gay when they aren't, the same can happen with paedophile). No one else has commented so far, so I will have to leave it up to you. I don't want to argue the toss, except to say I was thinking of the verb and there was absolutely no intention to be uncomplimentary to women, having been married myself, and I am now a widower. DonnanZ (talk) 11:02, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Donnanz: I’m not casting any aspersions on you, of course. I was just pointing out that no one seems to nominate entries like the ones you just mentioned, and yet we seem to get others which are unflattering to women. So we should exercise some care. Happy to hear from other editors about this too. — SGconlaw (talk) 11:52, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
- In the meantime, I have gone "off the boil". DonnanZ (talk) 15:58, 12 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Sgconlaw: While I agree about the others you mentioned, I fail to see how the neutral anatomical term "breast" is "unflattering" unless you mean that word in the strict sense of "not portraying in a positive light" rather than the more likely interpretation of "portraying a negative light". However, I don't find this nomination a particularly interesting word (either noun or verb), so I'm not going to argue for it to be WOTD. (breast drill, maybe, if we had a definition for it—it's a drill that you lean on with your chest to apply force.) Also, here's a suggestion for the problem you've raised. Give each nomination one point for each of the following criteria it matches: 1. it would result in disproportionate featuring of terms that apply to women, compared to terms that apply to men; 2. it's an uninteresting word; 3. it's a term for a sexualized part of women's bodies, even if it's not negative in connotation; 4. it's a derogatory term for a woman. If a nomination scores 2 or more, don't feature it. ← PointyOintment ❬t & c❭ 19:14, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

- While the verb senses of the word are innocuous, on balance that is not what will come to readers' minds when they see the word. Erring on the side of caution, I don't think the word should be featured. — SGconlaw (talk) 18:30, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

- @Sgconlaw: Puzzlement, not impatience. I was suggesting a possible date. And your efforts are much appreciated. DonnanZ (talk) 10:03, 5 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Donnanz: well, please consider how your remarks can be interpreted. This isn't the first time I've seen comments that appear snarky, even if this is not your intent. I will naturally give priority to setting WOTDs for dates which are coming up sooner. If you can think of a suitable date for a particular nomination, then moving it into the "Nominations for particular days" section makes it more likely that I will attend to it.
